The Upper Room: A Space of Holy Gathering

Situated atop Mount Zion, the Upper Room, or Cenacle, beckons visitors into the very heart of Christian tradition. Known in Christianity as the location of the Last Supper (Matthew 26:17-30), this space is steeped in sacred memory.

The present-day structure, a simple room with a vaulted ceiling and Gothic arches, isn’t the original Upper Room Jesus and his disciples knew. However, it holds the spiritual significance of that hallowed evening, when Jesus shared his last meal with his disciples before his arrest and crucifixion.

This room also holds importance as the place where the disciples gathered in fear after Jesus’ death (John 20:19), and where they were filled with the Holy Spirit during the Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4). It was here that the early Christian church was born.

Today, the Upper Room continues to be a place of contemplation and prayer. Visitors from around the world come to experience its serene ambiance, reflecting on the profound events that took place here. They often leave with a renewed sense of the historical depth and enduring impact of those transformative moments.

The Upper Room is more than just a historical site; it is a living testament to foundational Christian beliefs about community, sacrament, and the divine presence.
