Via Dolorosa: The Path of Suffering and Salvation

Winding through the bustling streets of Old Jerusalem is a path of profound spiritual significance: the Via Dolorosa. Translated as the ‘Way of Sorrow,’ it marks the route Jesus is believed to have taken, bearing the cross, on His journey to Golgotha for crucifixion.

Embarking on the Via Dolorosa is an intensely personal journey of reflection and reverence. It takes one through the Stations of the Cross, a series of 14 stops, each marking an event from Jesus’s trial to His burial, as narrated in the Gospels. From the spot where Jesus was condemned by Pilate (Matthew 27:26), to where He encountered His mother (Luke 23:27-31), to His crucifixion and burial (John 19:41-42), the Via Dolorosa invites an intimate walk in Jesus’ final earthly footsteps.

Every Friday, a traditional procession led by the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land traces this hallowed path, recalling the events of the Passion in poignant detail. But for believers worldwide, any visit to the Via Dolorosa, at any time, is a pilgrimage of the heart.

Today, as visitors walk this path, they experience a deep connection to the Passion of Christ, vividly reliving the depth of His sacrifice and the enormity of His love for humanity.
